Bebe’s Chocolate Cake

World famous in our family!! I have lost count of how many Bebe ( My grandmother) Chocolate cakes I have made it was the first cake  ever baked  Recipe by Betty Randal


  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 125g butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp golden syrup
  • 1 tbsp cocoa
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • pinch of salt


  1. Preheat oven to 180ºC, fan bake. Grease and line with baking paper a 21cm cake tin.
  2. Cream in a bowl the butter and sugar, add the egg and vanilla. Sift in the cocoa, flour, baking powder and salt and mix well.
  3. Heat the milk and golden syrup to almost boiling and add the baking soda (it will make the milk froth up). Combine the milk mix to the cake mixture and mix gently.
  4. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 30 mins. Cool in tin for 10 mins then turn out onto a cake rack.
  5. Ice when cool with the chocolate icing from the unbaked cake recipe.
