Classic Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

For firmer icing add more icing sugar, for softer add more milk. Recipe by add a


  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 3-4 cups icing sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 to 3 tbsp milk or heavy cream


  1. Place butter in a mixer on medium until it is smooth and light in colour.
  2. Add the icing sugar 1/2 cup at a time after each 1/2 cup turn mixer up to high for 10 seconds to lighten it up.
  3. Add the vanilla and salt and combine well. Add the milk until frosting has reached your preferred consistency.
